INT. SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT, FORENSIC ANALYSIS – DAY
[Crowley taps on the already-open door as she enters the room. LEE POWERS, 30s, tech guru, is typing at a laptop. He stops and turns around.]
Crowley: Any luck Lee?
Lee: Hey Sheriff. Well, I managed to get most of the… goo out of the inside of the tape.
Crowley: Does it play?
Lee: Not in any normal recorder. But I digitally analyze the recording itself to get a pretty close representation of what we would've heard if the–
Crowley: Yeah, yeah. What does it say?
Lee: Considering the amount of what seems to be voice modulation, and the fact that the tape appears to have been recorded over multiple times…
[He presses a key. Crowley and Lee listen to a garbled mess. We know it's Jon's tape, but they can't make it out.]
Crowley: What the fuck is that?
Lee: That's what we've got.
Crowley: Well… Enhance.
Lee: That's not how it works. You can't just make something better quality. We're not like–
Crowley: (Stern) Enhance, Lee.
[Lee sighs.]
Lee: I'll do what I can.
EXT. SIDEWALK – DAY
[Crowley opens her car door from inside. Jon is standing outside it.]
Crowley: Get in.
[Jon fidgets.]
Jon: Uh, Crowley, I'd really rather know what this about…
Crowley: You know what it's about, Spacer. Get in so I don't have to make you.
Levant: Seems like the jig is up, Jon. You should make her arrest you, if I'm being honest.
[Jon sighs.]
Jon: Don't you want me in the back seat?
Crowley: That'll draw more attention to it, and frankly I don't think either of us wants that. So do both of us a damn favor and get in my patrol car right now.
[Jon gets in. He closes the door. From outside –]
Levant: You want me to come, or…?
INT. CROWLEY'S CAR – DAY
[Jon puts on his seatbelt.]
Crowley: Thank you. Sheesh.
[Crowley starts driving. They sit in silence for a few seconds?]
Jon: Should we talk about the purple body?
Crowley: We'll talk about all of it, I'm sure. Later.
Jon: Later… Got it. So should we just… sit in silence until it's official?
Crowley: You know my preference when it comes to you. I'd rather keep this part official, otherwise I'm going to be the one completely screwed over.
Jon: Crowley, really… I don't know why any of this would impact you negatively. It falls on me…
Crowley: Hmph. Yeah right. Everything with you comes back on me some time or another. You're my employee, or well, you were… So I'm responsible for whatever happens.
Jon: I'm sorry. If I could go back in time, knowing what I know now, I would've been more forthright with you. We never needed to have so much contention, if I just–
Crowley: Would've done your job instead of trying to do mine too? Sure. But… I get it. I already forgave you for that part.
Crowley: And, well, from my side, too… I wish you felt like you could've trusted me. Or that I paid more attention to notice shit in the first place. But we move on to more important things now.
Jon: Who else knows about this? With me, I mean.
Crowley: Mendez, Hart. I'm sure Grant will find out soon enough. And Kim.
Jon: Jesus, Kim too? As if they need another reason to hate me.
Crowley: I'm not exactly in the best light these days either. Especially after this, I'm sure. But what's done is done.
Jon: I'm surprised you're not… more mad? I don't know. Yelling at me? Lecturing?
Crowley: Why would I lecture you? I don't lecture.
Jon: Uhh…
[Crowley takes a turn.]
Jon: Isn't the precinct the other way?
Crowley: We're not going to my department.
Jon: Jesus… Is this like one of those shady places cops go to interrogate people?
Crowley: The fuck are you talking about, Spacer? We're going to the meat packing plant.
[She takes another turn off a dirt road.]
Jon: Oh, fuck. Crowley, please. You don't need to do this. I'll tell you whatever you… what's going on?
[They pull up to a crime scene with sirens and police outside. Crowley parks.]
Crowley: We're here. Quit being weird and let's make this official. And don't make me regret it.
[Crowley gets out.]
Jon: What the hell?
[Jon follows suit a second later.]
EXT. PARKING LOT – DAY
[As soon as Jon's out of the car, Mendez walks up.]
Mendez: (half-heartedly) Here you go.
[He hands Jon a badge.]
Jon: Jesus, Mendez, what happened to your hand?
Mendez: Just take the badge, doc.
Jon: What's this?
[Crowley comes from around the squad car.]
Crowley: An official consultant's ID. Just temporary for today.
Mendez: Cause a visitor's pass for a crime scene is a thing, apparently.
Crowley: Mendez, don't start with me.
Mendez: Alls I'm saying is, this is just another case of going outside the book.
Crowley: That's literally why these passes exist.
Jon: Guys — I know what this is. I meant… why? This has nothing to do with ghosts, or… a purple body?
Mendez: Ghosts?
Crowley: No. Well, maybe a purple body. We found evidence we need you to examine that might be linked to the Vinchenzo Candor case. Follow me.
[Crowley starts walking. Jon follows.]
Mendez: (whispering) Did he say "ghosts"?
Crowley: (whispering) Who fucking knows.
Jon: Why did you bring me? Why not doctor Klark?
Crowley: Klark is great in a lab, but he's never been to a crime scene like this. I need your eyes here.
Mendez: I think that was a compliment.
Jon: So that whole car ride… You were talking about coming to a crime scene with you… as a consultant.
Crowley: Yeah. Why? What did you think it was?
Jon: Yeah. This. Exactly.
Crowley: Watch your head.
[Crowley ducks inside. Mendez and Jon follow.]
INT. MEAT PACKING PLANT – DAY
[The place is decrepit and abandoned. Mendez breaths in sharply.]
Mendez: Jesus, that smell never gets better.
Jon: What smell? (laughing) Kidding. Come on Mendez! (beat) I didn't bring any Carrion this time.
[Crowley pulls out a cigarette.]
Crowley: That's what these are for.
Jon: You're going to smoke on a crime scene?
[Crowley uses her lighter then passes it to Mendez.]
Crowley: (cigarette in mouth) Your loss.
[They keep walking as Mendez uses the lighter too. Crowley and Mendez occasionally take drags and blow some as they walk.]
Crowley: It's not like we'll damage anything here anyway.
Jon: Smoke could contaminate the evidence…
Mendez: Have you looked around, Doc? Everything here is contaminated.
Jon: Different kind of contamination. (beat) You said this is a meat packing plant?
Crowley: Used to be, a couple of years ago.
Jon: It looks more run down than just a couple of years.
Mendez: We're thinking it was used for some other stuff recently. Much worse types of… meat.
[Mendez gets antsy just saying the word "meat."]
Crowley: Stop it. We tracked some intel back to this place from a few sources close to Vinchenzo's old operation.
Mendez: Which would've been easier if we'd gotten it directly from Vinchenzo.
Crowley: Mendez, wait here.
[They stop suddenly.]
Mendez: (grumbling) Sure thing, boss.
Crowley: You go ahead. Give me a minute.
Jon: Uhh, where should I…
Crowley: Look around, with gloves, and put markers down in places we need to scope out.
Jon: I don't even know what I'm looking for–
Crowley: Sixty fucking seconds, Spacer.
Jon: Sure, yeah…
[He walks away. Crowley and Mendez argue quietly in the background.]
Crowley: Mendez, pull it together for today at least. We can talk later.
Mendez: I don't know if I can do this, Fran. It's… fucking wrong.
[They fade out.]
Jon: What is their issue today?
[From nearby, KATE GELLER, answers.]
Kate: They're in love.
[Jon spins around.]
Jon: Oh. You're not a cop. Why are you here?
Kate: I'm dead. I'm assuming you are, too, since you can hear me.
Jon: I'm not, actually. I can see ghosts, though. Are you one of the victims of this place?
Kate: I was killed here, yeah. My name's Kate.
Jon: Jon. I'm sorry about what happened to you. I think I'm here to figure that out.
Kate: There's not much to figure out. Everyone else left already.
Jon: Everyone else?
[Crowley rounds the corner, still a little bit away.]
Crowley: Spacer.
Jon: The police don't know about my… gift. Hold on and then you and I can talk again.
[Crowley gets closer.]
Jon: Everything okay?
Crowley: Mendez disagrees with some things inside the department. But he's not wrong. Unfortunately, getting the info from Vinchenzo wasn't an option. But we're here, and we found something you need to see.
Jon: Remains?
Crowley: Among other things. (beat) This door here.
INT. MEAT PACKING PLANT, SLAUGHTER ROOM – DAY
[They enter the large room, filled with meat hooks and a chopping table in the center.]
Jon: Jesus. It looks like my lab, but with more meat hooks.
Crowley: According to blueprints, this was the main slaughter room. They'd kill the cattle, drain the blood, chop and hang.
Jon: And knowing Vinchenzo's operation, you're thinking they butchered humans…
Crowley: Women, mostly. The Chef was using this place to kill and package his victims, then send them off using a local shipping company.
Jon: The Chef?
Crowley: Big fucker. The muscle for Vinchenzo, apparently.
Jon: And you've arrested him now with this info, right? He's not going to show up?
Crowley: He's dead.
Jon: Shit. How?
Crowley: You asked what happened to me a few weeks ago. Mendez and I… I put us in a dangerous situation and we got T-boned by another car. Chef and Vinchenzo died in the accident. And Mendez lost two fingers.
Jon: Jesus. I didn't hear about any of this.
Crowley: Yeah. And sure as shit, neither of those two has their bodies handled by Stiffs.
Jon: Poor Mendez.
Crowley: Yeah.
Jon: Can he still use a gun?
Crowley: Focus on the case, Spacer.
Jon: You nearly died and I had no idea. What would've happened if you did? For once, we need to stop keeping secrets from each other.
Crowley: You sound like Mendez. I'm not going to die, kid. Just look around and tell me what you find.
Jon: I'm sorry Crowley, but if Vin and the Chef are both dead, why is this top priority?
Crowley: Because of this.
[Crowley slides an IV pole along the tile floor.]
Jon: An IV pole? What's that doing here?
Crowley: Geez you're dense. I always forget that. (beat) Vinchenzo has CDJ or whatever, and he–
Jon: CJD. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
Crowley: Whatever. Before he died, he told me he knew about it.
Jon: I'd imagine if you're eating human meat, you probably know about it.
Crowley: (grumpily) Not always.
Crowley: (beat) But Vinchenzo said he had someone working with him who would "check the supply" before shipment. They missed one.
Jon: And he caught CJD.
Crowley: And so did any other cannibals who ate the meat they shipped out.
Jon: So? We already knew the case went outside of Springfield.
Crowley: So, who was checking the fucking meat for him? Vinchenzo was going to cooperate and give us his contacts here and across the country.
Jon: And then he died in the car accident.
Crowley: Right.
Jon: So now we're left trying to piece things together.
Crowley: Except for one thing…
Jon: What?
Crowley: Ugh. No more secrets, right? God, it pains me to say it.
Jon: Right…
Crowley: We got the location of Stephen Maur's body from Vinchenzo. He said they did kill the kid, but someone else wanted him dead. So that's who they gave the body to.
Jon: Hold on. You're saying that Vinchenzo was supplying Jo–
Crowley: He was supplying bodies. Mostly living ones other than Maur, to the purple body killer. And in exchange, they were checking the meat for disease. Until they weren't.
Jon: Jesus Christ… Holy… fucking… wow. This is–
Crowley: It comes full circle.
Jon: Does Mendez know?
Crowley: Vinchenzo mentioned it to both of us before he died. But Mendez doesn't know you're looking into the purple body killer with me.
Jon: So he thinks I'm here…
Crowley: Helping close the case on Vinchenzo's trafficking ring. Which is… why it's a sore subject.
Jon: Crowley, this heavy. This is… I need to tell you– About that tape you found in the purple body last week… I–
Crowley: I'm having my guy work on it. We haven't gotten anything yet, but that's the other reason I brought you here.
Jon: Look, I can explain–
Crowley: I think whoever this killer is, they might have found out that you noticed a pattern. I think the tape is a threat, that they're going to go after you next.
Jon: (hesistant) Really?
Crowley: I can't be sure. I'm not saying the killer learned it from Kim, but you definitely didn't try to hide the fact that you knew they existed. So whatever way they found out, they know you're involved. And after what happened with Curtis… I don't want to take any chances. So you're on this scene with me. You're going to be on the next one with me, too. And every god damn day until I can get you back in that lab for good.
Jon: Wow… I'm… Thank you, Fran.
Crowley: Alright, let's keep it at Sheriff Crowley, okay? Geez. (beat) Here.
[She hands him a walkie.]
Crowley: This perimeter is secure, but keep the walkie on you at all times. I'm going to go check on Mendez and apologize again.
Jon: Thanks, Crowley.
[Crowley leaves. Once she's gone, Jon sighs heavily.]
Jon: What a fucking day.
[Kate was nearby. She comes closer.]
Kate: That police officer — is what she said true? The Chef and Vinchenzo are — are — dead?
Jon: I think so. She has no reason to lie. You were listening?
Kate: It's not often I get — I get — living people h-here.
Jon: How long have you been here?
Kate: A few months. Why?
Jon: That stutter… You should consider moving on.
Kate: If Vinchenzo and The Chef are really dead… That means no more women will be coming here, right?
Jon: To be killed? Yeah, hopefully. Unless Joy's still using this place. Did you see anyone else here besides the Chef and Vinchenzo?
Kate: Not anyone living.
Jon: No doctor or anyone in a lab coat?
Kate: I said no.
[Jon looks around for a moment.]
Jon: What about bodies left in here, or some other medical equipment?
Kate: You were involved in this investigation for a while, right?
Jon: On the outskirts, really. Why?
Kate: Well, could you ask your friends a question for me?
Jon: I can try, but… I can't just say that you asked. I need a way to explain it.
Kate: I had CJD. Genetic, passed down from my dad. Were you two saying that… I was eaten by…
Jon: You're Kate Geller… the missing woman from the freezer. Jesus Christ, yeah. Your case… You and Amber were the reason we found and put a stop to Vinchenzo's operation.
Kate: Because you found Amber alive. In the freezer? She never came here.
Jon: No… Kate, Amber died before you, I think. They killed her in the restaurant and then put her back in the freezer. She thought you were dead in there, too.
Kate: She's dead… God. All this time, I thought maybe she'd… I stayed here because I just kept waiting. Waiting for her body to come in and be chopped up like mine was… Just so I could be here when she turned into a ghost too. I explained things to so many other girls when they died. I fucking… I helped them understand and feel better, because I told myself I was practicing for Amber. And every god damned day she didn't show up made me a little more hopeful that… God damnit.
Jon: Kate… I'm so sorry. I was at the restaurant when we shut it down. Amber, well… as a ghost, she was still in the freezer waiting for you to come back, just in case. She helped me figure out the connection with your CJD. It's how we proved the link between Vinchenzo's restaurant and your disappearance.
Kate: Is that supposed to make me feel better?
Jon: Amber set out to look for you when I left her. She didn't find you yet?
Kate: Have you been listening at all?
Jon: You should go back to the restaurant. She doesn't know about this place. If she's looking for you, maybe she'll check back there…
Kate: So I'm just supposed to wait again? What if she gave up? What if she didn't wait?
Jon: What did you say about Crowley and Mendez earlier? The two cops.
Kate: That they're in love.
Jon: How can you tell?
Kate: It's obvious, even if they don't admit it to each other. They have a bond that won't break, regardless of how much they argue. Which they were doing a lot here before you showed up.
Jon: Amber regretted not saying that she loved you, in the freezer. I don't think she'd give up waiting for you.
Kate: (crying with a slight laugh)
[Fuck you, Jon… God.]
Jon: I am sorry for what happened to both of you, Kate. But your bond helped save dozens of other potential women from being killed. Go find Amber.
[Kate sniffles.]
Kate: Thank you. (beat) Do you — Do you need my help pointing out places where–
Jon: I'll figure it out. Your job's done.
[She leaves. Jon is left alone; he sighs again.]
Jon: What a fucking day indeed.
[He walks around the room, placing a marker here and there.]
Jon: Blood stains… Definitely something to check out. Cabinets and things… mostly empty.
[He opens drawer. He finds some medical supplies wrapped in plastic, unopened.]
Jon: Holy shit… sealed scalpels and needles… What the fuck.
[He presses on the walkie. He's still looking through things as he's talking.]
Jon: Sheriff Crowley, this is Jon Spacer.
[He lets go.]
Mendez (O.S.): You have to say over when you're done. And copy when you start talking. Over.
[He presses the button again and every other time he speaks.]
Jon: Copy. Sheriff Crowley, this is Jon. I found something, over.
Crowley (O.S.): Spacer, Mendez is messing with you. Whatcha got?
Jon: There are some drawers in this slaughter room filled with medical supplies. Like hospital grade, sealed stuff.
Crowley (O.S.): On my way. Mendez, get in contact with Springfield General's supply coordinator and check their logs for any missing supplies.
Mendez (O.S.): Copy. Over.
[Jon finds a cabinet full of chemo bags. He squishes one.]
Jon: Radiology too… I just found a bunch of chemo bags.
Crowley (O.S.): Chemo?
[Jon doesn't press the walkie. He says this to himself.]
Jon: Kim…
